Owned and operated by the same Pennsylvania Dutch family since 1984—who also own the donut and salad stand across the aisle—Beiler’s Bakery is the place to go for fresh baked cakes, cupcakes, breads, cookies, pies, and other PA Dutch specialties. All their baking is done on-site using natural ingredients, and if you’re overwhelmed by the hundreds of items stocked in their display cases, one of the staff members will gladly assist you in finding the perfect treat for any occasion. Make sure to pick up a sticky bun while you’re there, and don’t miss the whoopee pies—the Amish were baking up these buttercream-filled cake sandwiches long before they became a national food trend!

Named “one of America’s 20 best dessert spots” by Fodor’s Travel Guide, Beiler’s Doughnuts has quickly become Philly’s go-to destination for fresh-made, hand-rolled donuts. With their more than 50 different flavors at $10 a dozen, it’s easy to see why. Like their sister stand across the aisle, Beiler’s is owned and operated by multiple generations of the same Pennsylvania Dutch family, using recipes and techniques that have been passed down for hundreds of years. Though the donuts draw the biggest crowds—especially on Saturdays, when the line often winds out the door and along the Arch Street side of the market—the barrel pickles and traditional PA Dutch puddings and salads at this stand are also worth the stop, all made with natural ingredients and served with a smile.

Dienner’s Bar-B-Q has been serving authentic Amish-style rotisseries and wings in the Reading Terminal Market since 1980. Their chicken arrives fresh every morning from farms in the Philadelphia region, and they’ve been using the same family recipes—and only the highest quality, local ingredients—for three generations. Father-son owners Sam and Anthony Dienner are confident that their barbecue chicken is the best in town. But don’t take their word for it—swing by and try it for yourself. With three different types of wings, smoked and rotisserie legs, whole and half rotisserie chickens, and pulled chicken sandwiches to choose from, plus a selection of home-style sides and signature sauces, you’ll find just the thing to satisfy even the strongest BBQ craving. And while you’re there, be sure to ask about their Frequent Chicken Card: Buy eight specials and get your ninth one free!

One of Reading Terminal Market’s most iconic eateries, this diner offers rib-sticking, Pennsylvania Dutch fare to take away or to enjoy at the counter, elbow-to-elbow with locals and visitors alike. Breakfast is popular and mornings start early with glasses of fresh-squeezed orange juice, eggs however you like them, and stacks of blueberry-studded pancakes and apple cinnamon French toast, each generously buttered and accompanied by crispy bacon. Lunch means burgers and deli sandwiches and piles of fresh-cut fries, or a selection from their rotating specials like chicken and waffles, pork and sauerkraut, or Pennsylvania Dutch–style chicken pot pie, a silky soup where dumplings are cooked into the gravy. Already had lunch? Stop by for shoo fly pie, made with molasses, or try a warm apple dumpling, a whole cored apple wrapped in pastry and baked until it slumps into a sweet, cinnamon-scented treat, served with a splash of cool heavy cream.

From a small corner stand at Reading Terminal, Glick’s Rib Shack puts out a big aroma. There’s no seating and the menu at this Amish barbecue stand is mercifully brief, because they stick to what they do best: spareribs, baby back ribs, and a boneless rib sandwich. All of the above are available as lunch combinations with two sides—creamy coleslaw, green beans, baked macaroni and cheese, or crispy potato wedges—and a beverage. The ribs are slow cooked with a spice rub, so they’re savory, juicy, and tender, but not sloppy with sauce. The sauce comes in when you order. Select mild or spicy and you’ll get a cup perfect for dipping into, bite by bite. It’s a little bit messy, but this barbecue is worth it.

If you love bacon, be sure to plan a stop at L. Halteman Family Country Foods. The Riehl family, three generations of butchers from Lancaster County, offer no fewer than eight varieties: applewood, pepper, maple glazed, and even those made from beef and turkey. Their most popular is the hickory variety that they smoke themselves, and the smoky flavor doesn’t end there. Pick up ham hocks or turkey wings to flavor a pot of greens, or succulent smoked pork chops to eat with sautéed apples. Besides bacon, the shop offers fresh cuts of prime beef, poultry, and pork—much of it raised in Lancaster County, as well as a selection of Lancaster County preserves, dry goods, and even vegetables in the height of summer. Brothers Jake and Samuel Riehl run the show, but nearly every smiling face behind the counter is a member of their extended Mennonite family.

The Esh Family, from the town of Hatville in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, has been growing and producing quality foods for more than 40 years. In the early 1980s, they opened Hatville Deli at the Reading Terminal in order to meet the growing demands of travelers, conventioneers, and the local community. And today, now in their second generation of family ownership, they are one of the busiest lunch spots in the market. Sit at the counter and order one of their famous, Amish-style sandwiches—like sweet Lebanon bologna with smoked Cheddar or the Corned Beef Special with coleslaw and Russian dressing. Then head to the other side of the stand, where you’ll find an impressive selection of farm-fresh deli meats, bacon, scrapple, beef jerky, butter, and cheeses, all cut or sliced to order, so you can enjoy Hatville’s delicious products in the comfort of your own home.

Lancaster, Pennsylvania’s rolling hills are dotted with red barns filled with black-and-white cows. Lancaster County Dairy offers Philadelphia the chance to enjoy fresh dairy products from local farms like these. Their milk and cream make the short trip downtown from Kreider Farms, a third-generation family farm, founded in 1935 and based in Mannheim, Pennsylvania. They also carry Pequea Valley Yogurt, exceptionally rich yogurt made from the hormone- and antibiotic-free milk of Abner King’s Jersey cows, either plain or flavored with fruit, chocolate, or maple. Look for golden butter, rich buttermilk, eggs, goat’s milk, and even raw milk in glass bottles. Though it would be worth stopping for any of these alone, some of Lancaster County Dairy’s most popular products are their colorful lineup of juices and flavored lemonades. Fresh-squeezed orange, lemon, and grapefruit juices create a rainbow in the case alongside strawberry lemonade, Cranberry Cooler, and the popular “Victory Thirst Clincher,” a mix of lemon, orange, and strawberry.

It’s a tough choice between the sweet and the savory at Miller’s Twist, Roger Miller’s shop that sells soft, butter-dipped Amish-style pretzels. These pretzels, a Reading Terminal favorite, aren’t the chewy pretzels that Philadelphia is known for, but plenty of people prefer them. These are made from fresh dough throughout the day, rolled and twisted by hand, and tender. The faint tang from baking soda and the rich butter gives them their distinctive flavor. Since their pretzels are so good you might want to eat them three times a day, Miller’s Twist has figured out how. There are many breakfast options:  bacon, egg, and cheese, all wrapped in pretzel dough. Lunch choices include pretzel-wrapped hot dogs or turkey sausage flavored with broccoli and cheddar.
