Bringing a taste of the Big Easy to the City of Brotherly Love, Chef Bill Beck prides himself on the rich, authentic Cajun and Creole flavors that Beck’s Cajun Cafe serves up for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The experienced restaurateur, three-time Best of Philly winner, and two-time guest chef at James Beard House keeps it casual and classic at Reading Terminal. Naturally, Beck’s offers New Orleans classics like gumbo, jambalaya, étouffée, and the beloved muffaletta sandwich, but they also bring a Cajun spin to morning with breakfast po’ boys like steak and egg with salsa, and a taste of the South with deep-fried mac and cheese and shrimp and crawdad pasta. Stop by on Wednesdays or Sundays for freshly fried beignets to go with your morning coffee. Can’t make it in until lunch? Try the Train Wreck Po’ Boy, stuffed with andouille, steak, salami, cheese, and onion. Wreck or no, it’s worth it.

Some people will tell you that you have to go to a certain neighborhood to find a great Philly cheese steak, but the folks at Carmen’s will show you otherwise. Family owned and operated since 1983, every morning they heat up the grill to make Philly’s best-known sandwich for visitors from all over the world. In addition to the classic cheese steak with onions, mushrooms, and peppers, they also take a few creative liberties. There’s the Franklin, a cheese steak with American cheese and Philadelphia cream cheese. The Kamikaze cheese steak gets hot peppers, pepper jack cheese, and hot sauce. The Meat Lovers cheese steak also has bacon and pepperoni. Carmen’s even makes a vegetarian cheese steak with seitan. Beyond the cheese steak, they also make classic, Italian-style hoagies with prosciutto, a meatball sandwich with parmesan, and a veggie hoagie loaded with a base of spinach and broccoli rabe, customizable to your specifications. Place your order at the register and they’ll hand you a playing card. As long as you remember your suit, you can’t lose.

Dienner’s Bar-B-Q has been serving authentic Amish-style rotisseries and wings in the Reading Terminal Market since 1980. Their chicken arrives fresh every morning from farms in the Philadelphia region, and they’ve been using the same family recipes—and only the highest quality, local ingredients—for three generations. Father-son owners Sam and Anthony Dienner are confident that their barbecue chicken is the best in town. But don’t take their word for it—swing by and try it for yourself. With three different types of wings, smoked and rotisserie legs, whole and half rotisserie chickens, and pulled chicken sandwiches to choose from, plus a selection of home-style sides and signature sauces, you’ll find just the thing to satisfy even the strongest BBQ craving. And while you’re there, be sure to ask about their Frequent Chicken Card: Buy eight specials and get your ninth one free!

Tommy Nicolosi’s culinary legacy began in 1918, when his Grandfather Gaetano opened a butcher shop in South Philly. On occasion, Gaetano would cook big specialty roasts for customers in the garage out back. This eventually led to an off-shoot sandwich business, and in the late 1970s, DiNic’s Roast Pork and Beef was born. Tommy DiNic’s is now in its fourth generation, as Tommy owns and runs the shop with his son, Joey. With a deep respect for the past and an eager eye on the future, Joey has built upon DiNic’s lineup of classic Italian sandwiches to include new favorites like the slow-roasted brisket of beef and Italian-style pulled pork. The Nicolosis’ attention to detail, dedication to sourcing quality ingredients, and reverence for the slow, everything-from-scratch process of their old-world brethren has landed them huge points with customers, aficionados, and the media alike. Following appearances on the Travel Channel’s Man vs. Food and Best Sandwich in America, the DiNic’s Roast Pork Sandwich was crowned the Best Sandwich in America in 2013. This sit-down restaurant has everything you want in a diner: kitschy, retro décor, a mix of vinyl booth and counter seating, a menu of comfort foods made from scratch, and, of course, breakfast served all day. Having grown up on a farm down south, owner and Chef Jack McDavid knows the value of fresh ingredients and good old-fashioned hospitality. That’s why, since he opened the Down Home Diner in 1987, he’s forged strong relationships with local farmers and fellow Reading Terminal Market vendors and based his menu on produce and meats that are grown and raised in the Philadelphia area. The biscuits and cornbread are baked in-house every morning, the jams and soups are prepared from scratch, and the burgers are made from freshly ground meat sourced from merchants in the Reading Terminal Market. For breakfast, try scratch-made Blueberry Pancakes, and for lunch or dinner don’t miss the Skillet Fried Chicken or Pan-Seared Salmon.

One of Reading Terminal Market’s most iconic eateries, this diner offers rib-sticking, Pennsylvania Dutch fare to take away or to enjoy at the counter, elbow-to-elbow with locals and visitors alike. Breakfast is popular and mornings start early with glasses of fresh-squeezed orange juice, eggs however you like them, and stacks of blueberry-studded pancakes and apple cinnamon French toast, each generously buttered and accompanied by crispy bacon. Lunch means burgers and deli sandwiches and piles of fresh-cut fries, or a selection from their rotating specials like chicken and waffles, pork and sauerkraut, or Pennsylvania Dutch–style chicken pot pie, a silky soup where dumplings are cooked into the gravy. Already had lunch? Stop by for shoo fly pie, made with molasses, or try a warm apple dumpling, a whole cored apple wrapped in pastry and baked until it slumps into a sweet, cinnamon-scented treat, served with a splash of cool heavy cream.

El Merkury was founded by Sofia Deleon. Deleon is a native Guatemalan who moved to the US in 2012 for college, first obtaining a degree in Food Industry Management from Michigan State and later an MBA in Food Marketing from St. Joseph’s University. Deleon worked on the corporate side for companies representing Kerrygold, Hormel and McCormick among others. It was in 2017 when the political landscape was changing and there was a lot of negativity towards Immigrants and Central America that Deleon decided to quit her job and follow her dream to open a restaurant. The goal was to create a place that offered food representing the best of the small countries that were often negatively portrayed in media but that had so much to offer.

El Merkury was born initially as a series of pop ups and a virtual kitchen serving fast casual Guatemalan and Salvadorian street food. In May 5th, 2018 it found its permanent home in 2104 Chestnut st. It is the first and only quick service restaurant focusing on Central American Street Food and Churros. The name El Merkury came about as broken Spanish for The Market.

Fast forward to 2021 we are excited to open El Merkury at the Market at Reading Terminal Market. The vision is to create a modern Guatemalan deli with fresh tortillas, pupusas and churros made to order for home consumption as well as salsas, pickles and breakfast. It will be the first of its kind slated to open at the beginning of April.
