Owned and operated by the same Pennsylvania Dutch family since 1984—who also own the donut and salad stand across the aisle—Beiler’s Bakery is the place to go for fresh baked cakes, cupcakes, breads, cookies, pies, and other PA Dutch specialties. All their baking is done on-site using natural ingredients, and if you’re overwhelmed by the hundreds of items stocked in their display cases, one of the staff members will gladly assist you in finding the perfect treat for any occasion. Make sure to pick up a sticky bun while you’re there, and don’t miss the whoopee pies—the Amish were baking up these buttercream-filled cake sandwiches long before they became a national food trend!

Named “one of America’s 20 best dessert spots” by Fodor’s Travel Guide, Beiler’s Doughnuts has quickly become Philly’s go-to destination for fresh-made, hand-rolled donuts. With their more than 50 different flavors at $10 a dozen, it’s easy to see why. Like their sister stand across the aisle, Beiler’s is owned and operated by multiple generations of the same Pennsylvania Dutch family, using recipes and techniques that have been passed down for hundreds of years. Though the donuts draw the biggest crowds—especially on Saturdays, when the line often winds out the door and along the Arch Street side of the market—the barrel pickles and traditional PA Dutch puddings and salads at this stand are also worth the stop, all made with natural ingredients and served with a smile.

Philadelphia doesn’t slouch when it comes to baked goods, but there are far more bakers in Philadelphia than can have their own stands at Reading Terminal Market. Fortunately, that’s where Market Bakery comes in. The Market Bakery stocks their shelves with the wares of some of Philadelphia’s most beloved bakeries: handmade breads, bagels, pastries and rolls from Le Bus Bakery, and bagels and long rolls from Liscio’s Bakery. Not to mention a full and all-day menu of made-to-order breakfast sandwiches and deli favorites. Market Bakery offers a full, all-day menu of made-to-order breakfast sandwiches, deli favorites, and house-baked muffins which all pair perfectly with our hot or iced coffee!

Whether you’re a tourist looking for the perfect souvenir or a local in search of a sweet treat, the Pennsylvania General Store is the place to be. Michael and Julie Holahan opened it in 1987 as a lunch box catering business using the foods of Reading Terminal Market, but when someone asked them if they shipped Tastycakes they shifted their focus to building a collection of the best Pennsylvania-made products. These they assemble into gift baskets and goody trays to ship near and far. You’ll know you’ve spotted their shop when you see the handsome display of Hope’s Cookies, hand-dipped chocolate-covered pretzels, and tray after tray of chocolates, truffles, and caramels made by Pennsylvania’s premier chocolatiers. They also carry locally roasted coffee, Pennsylvania Dutch preserves and honey, handicrafts like ceramics and quilts, and handmade goods from young Philly artisans like Girls Can Tell, Wild Heart Paper and Tin Goat Soaps

Since 1921, when brothers Giuseppe and Gaetano first opened up shop in their South Philadelphia pasticceria, the Termini name has been associated with tradition, quality, and handmade Sicilian sweets. Now in the hands of the third generation of Termini brothers, the bakery never wavers from that foundation.

They still make traditional cookies, cakes, pastries, and torrone (nougat candy studded with nuts), just the way their grandfather and father did for over 90 years. Walk by their long counter filled with cookies fragrant with almond and orange—amaretti, biscotti, pignoli— flaky sfogliatelle, tall, immaculately frosted carrot and cream cakes, and you’ll understand why Termini leads the pack of Philadelphia’s Italian bakeries and has become a family tradition for so many people. Whether your pick is New York–style cheesecake, fig bars with Marsala and hazelnuts, or cannoli filled with whipped ricotta cheese, chocolate, or vanilla cream, a stop at Termini might become a family tradition for you, too.
